Hidden Camera in CMR College Hostel: Students Protest

Hyderabad: Students of CMR Engineering College in Telanganaโ€™s Medchal district staged a massive protest after discovering hidden cameras in their hostel bathrooms. The incident, reported on New Yearโ€™s Day, has raised serious concerns about privacy and safety in educational institutions.

Students Demand Justice

The controversy began at midnight on January 1, when students noticed handprints on bathroom ventilators and mirrors, suggesting that cameras may have been installed from the outside. This shocking discovery led students to gather in large numbers and chant slogans like โ€œWe want justice,โ€ demanding strict action against the hostel staff and warden.

Representatives from various student unions also joined the protest in solidarity, calling for accountability from the college administration.

Allegations Against Hostel Staff

In addition to hidden cameras, students have alleged misconduct by the hostel warden and staff. According to THE HANS BHARAT report, four members of the cooking staff and a female warden are under investigation for their potential involvement in the incident.

Police Begin Investigation

Hyderabad police quickly responded to the complaints, with a women Sub-Inspector and other officials visiting the hostel to initiate an inquiry. A police spokesperson said, โ€œWe have filed an FIR based on the complaints and arrested seven individuals so far. Additionally, 12 mobile phones have been seized for examination.โ€

The police emphasized that they are investigating all aspects of the case, including allegations of negligence and misconduct.

Safety Concerns in Educational Institutions

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, drawing attention to the importance of ensuring the safety and privacy of students, particularly women, in educational institutions. Protests have highlighted the lack of adequate security measures in the hostel, with demands for reforms to prevent such breaches in the future.

THE HANS BHARAT report stressed the urgent need for institutions to prioritize student safety and hold those responsible for lapses accountable.
