12 Killed, 15 Injured in Tragic Train Accident in Maharashtra
In a devastating incident on Wednesday evening, 12 passengers lost their lives, and 15 others sustained injuries after being run over by a train near Jalgaon, Maharashtra. The accident occurred when passengers aboard the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express jumped onto adjacent tracks in panic, fearing a fire in the train. Tragically, they were hit by the Bengaluru-Delhi Karnataka Express on the adjacent line.
The mishap took place between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora town around 4:45 PM after someone pulled the emergency chain. Despite initial claims of sparks or fire, officials later clarified no such incident was confirmed. A passenger recounted that sparks from the train wheels caused panic among travelers, leading some to jump off in fear.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking from Davos, announced โน5 lakh compensation for the deceasedโs families and assured that medical expenses for the injured would be covered. The Railway Board announced an additional โน1.5 lakh for the deceasedโs kin and โน50,000 for those with grievous injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed their condolences, with the PM calling the incident โdeeply distressing.โ
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conveyed his sorrow and directed authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured. Commissioner of Railway Safety Manoj Arora will investigate the incident and record passenger statements.
Eyewitnesses described horrific scenes, with mutilated bodies strewn across the tracks. Local villagers rushed to assist victims, providing immediate aid. Preliminary reports suggest the panic may have been caused by technical issues like a โhot axleโ or โbrake-binding.โ
The incident highlights the critical need for enhanced safety measures and passenger awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
