Telangana’s Comprehensive Caste and Socio-Economic Census Underway, Covering Over 1.17 Crore Families
Date: November 6, 2024
The Telangana government launched an extensive caste, socio-economic, and educational census on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. This ambitious exercise aims to collect detailed information on the social, economic, educational, employment, political, and caste status of the state’s 1.17 crore families. Data gathered will support effective planning and implementation of welfare schemes, ultimately promoting socio-economic growth across communities.
Objective and Scope of the Census
This historic initiative intends to build an accurate database on Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Backward Classes (BC), and other communities to better inform government programs. The census will also create a foundation for equal distribution of benefits, ensuring inclusivity and progress across Telangana.
Census Timeline and Structure
- First Three Weeks (Nov 6–26): Enumerators will visit each household to gather details like house number and family head’s name, marking each with a sticker for identification.
- Next Three Weeks: Data collected will be compiled, reviewed, and digitized at the mandal and district levels, with district nodal officers overseeing the process.
- Final Two Weeks: Field checks will ensure data authenticity, covering any previously missed households.
Efforts to Ensure Accuracy and Data Security
Each of Telangana’s 87,092 census blocks—19,328 within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and 67,764 in non-GHMC areas—comprises 150-175 families. Approximately 94,750 enumerators have been assigned to cover these blocks, supervised by district officials and additional collectors to ensure smooth execution.
The government has developed a 56-point questionnaire, supplemented by 19 additional questions, to capture comprehensive data on each family’s socio-economic and educational background. Exclusive dashboards have been created to track real-time progress, and stringent measures have been implemented to maintain data confidentiality.
Preparation and Community Support
Families are advised to keep essential documents ready—Aadhar cards, PAN cards, ration cards, and Dharani passbooks—to expedite the survey process. With the support of enumerators and the active participation of citizens, Telangana’s census exercise promises to set a model for inclusive data collection nationwide, fulfilling Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s vision for equitable welfare distribution.
